U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1863 TYPE I PERCUSSION MUSKET, smoothbore, possibly originally rifled, lockplate with eagle to center, "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" to fore, and "1863" to tail, barrel marked with "P" and eagle's head cartouche opposite hammer, stock with two inspectors cartouches, barrel rings with "U," buttplate marked "U.S." Dated 1863. 56" L, barrel 40" L.

Lock in working condition, expected pitting around and to percussion nipple, trigger guard sling swivel stuck in one position, sight screw replaced, buttplate slightly larger than stock, possibly replaced. Barrel exterior most likely cleaned with wire or steel wool.
