Harpers Ferry U.S. Model 1795 Type III Musket with State of Ohio Markings,
Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, c. 1815.
42 3/4 in., .71 caliber round barrel marked at the breech 'US' and eagle head over 'P' both in sunken oval cartouches, and 'OHIO' on the top of the barrel; flat lock with pointed tail stamped 'HARPERS/FERRY/[1]815' and with a spread wing eagle with a shield marked 'US' below the rounded pan, the inside of the lock with illegible mark above the mainspring; walnut stock with markings on the left side behind the side plate including 'V/JS' cartouche for Harpers Ferry inspector James Stubblefield, 'V,' and a small 'A[-]' mark, and below the trigger guard 'CL' and 'W'; iron furniture of proper form including a trigger guard with blunt finials, sling swivels, and a later steel rammer with button head and plain end.

There were 5,340 Harpers Ferry Model 1795 muskets delivered into military stores in 1815 (Peter A. Schmidt, U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets and Their Bayonets, The Early Years 1790-1815, (Woonsocket, R.I.; Andrew Mowbray Publishers, 2006), Chapter 1, especially p. 117).
The 'OHIO' marking on the barrel indicates that the musket was part of the distribution of arms to Ohio likely in the 1820s or 1830s according to provisions of the Militia Act of 1808 (Peter A. Schmidt, U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets and Their Bayonets, The Later Years 1816 through the Civil War, (Woonsocket, R.I.; Andrew Mowbray Publishers, 2007), pp. 250 and 255).

Condition
Metal has light gray toning and very fine underlying pitting, butt plate has stronger oxidation and pitting on the bottom, lock functions properly; stock has minor dings and dents, rammer is short and not original.
