Description
"VIRGINIAE PARTIS AUSTRALIS, ET FLORIDAE..."
c. 1639, VIRGINIAE PARTIS AUSTRALIS, ET FLORIDAE PARTIS ORIENTALIS, INTERJACENTIUM REGIONUM NOVA DESCRIPTIO, (by Jansson, Amsterdam), Very Fine.
15" x 19.75, uncolored. French text on verso, no imprint. This is a classic map based on the 1606 Mercator-Hondius example, but with many changes. Showing two large imaginary lakes with explanations in Latin. Although titled Florida and Virginia, the map shows mostly Carolina. The names on the coast are European and those inland derived from Indian names. The decorative cartouche holds six figures of Indians and Europeans. At bottom, two cherubs hold the scale of miles, and in the sea, three ships sail. A desirable map with light toning.
