Description
[Blaeu/US Southeast] VIRGINIAE PARTIS AUSTRALIS, ET FLORIDAE PARTIS ORIENTALIS, INTERJACENTIUMQ; REGIONUM NOVA DESCRIPTIO.
Blaeu and Jansson engraved 2 nearly identical maps on different copper plates, distinguishable by width and by the last longitude number at the lower right (in this case, the “200” misnumbering, indicating that this is Blaeu). The “Amerique” called for by Burden appears in the lower margin. [1663 or 1667.] 2nd state of image: A tail was added to the cherub to the left of the scale in 1640. French text on both sides of verso with the signing “K," as in the 1663 and 1667 editions of “Le Grand Atlas,” according to Burden. Outer edge of border: 14 ¾ x 19 ¾ in. (38.3 x 50.3 cm). The headline is “Floridae.” Area of coverage extends from what are now northern Florida to southeastern Virginia. First known appearance of Newport News on an engraved map (“Newport nesa,” founded in 1621). Burden 253. Schwartz and Ehrenberg, p108. 2 large Appalachian lakes. Double-page. Modern outline hand-coloring, incl cartouche, engraved ships, and shields.
Image near fine. Pencil to lower margin. Soiling to verso. Verso hinged at upper edge.
