WILLIAM MCKINLEY
(1843 - 1901) Twenty-fifth President of the United States, acquired Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and Hawaii, assassinated. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Dec. 26, 1899, the appointment of John G. Leefe as "Major of Infantry". Co-signed by Secretary of War ELIHU ROOT. Very boldly signed by both, bright and clean, fine condition. Leefe served as a lieutenant colonel of the 162nd N.Y. Infantry in the Civil War. He then took a commission as lieutenant in the 19th Infantry in which he would serve for the next 33 years, commanding a regiment in the Spanish-American War in Puerto Rico and in the Philippines.
