Tall Case Clock By Ephriam Willard
Tall Case Clock By Ephriam Willard
Item Details
Description
An important mahogany Federal tall case clock signed on the dial "E. Willard" and "warranted for Mr. Raymond", together with written documentation about the provenance. Ephraim Willard, born in 1755, was perhaps the most elusive of four Willard brothers, Simon, Aaron, Benjamin, and Ephriam- of whom Simon might be the best known. All of the Willards became clockmakers of extraordinary fame, working during the Federal era in and around Boston. Ephriam worked in the Boston area until about 1803 when he moved to New York. This clock together with the written provenance has been in the same family since the 18th century. It comes to the next owner with the original set of tin filled "canister" weights and original pendulum. The case is compete and original with only the scrolled crest and finials being later restorations.

Condition

This clock and its case is in exceptional condition, with an old, possibly original, finish. The dial shows very little wear with minor flaking and no in-painting. The eight-day clockworks have been recently serviced. Nevertheless, the mechanical condition of clocks and watches is not guaranteed, nor is the disclosure of any replaced or missing parts. When the term "running" is used it only means that the item was observed to tick for a short period of time and the essential parts appear to be with the item, but whether the items needs cleaning, oiling, adjustments etc. has not been explored.
