Description
A First / Second Day of the Battle of the Somme Killed in Action 1914-15 Star Medal to the Lancashire Fusiliers. 1914-15 Star medal, “11786 PTE A. BREARLEY. LAN: FUS:” A resident of Lower Broughton, Manchester, Albert Brearley served in France from 23rd November 1915 and was killed in action whilst serving with 16th (2nd Salford) Battalion, the Register of Soldiers Effects gives his date of death as 1st/2nd July 1916 whilst other sources state 2nd July. The 16th Battalion were in support for the attack on 1st July at Thiepval and 2 Companies attacked in support of the 15th Battalion suffering 231 casualties. His body was never recovered, and Albert Brearley is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
