“First Day” expresses the past, the current, and the future legacies of not only IAIA as a school, but IAIA as a community. The sky, painted by Tony Abeyta, reflects the past, older generations, and ancestors, looking down while reflecting upon 60 years of IAIA. The foreground represents IAIA at this moment. It shows the campus that Ofuskie knows, the place where he discovered his craft. The final component, painted by Ofuskie, is the new student arriving on campus, having not yet started, but ready to begin their journey. A button with the words “Decolonize Education”, looks towards the future of IAIA and the future of Indigenizing education.
