CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, MIGUEL DE. 1547-1616. The First [-Second] Part of the History of the Valorous and Wittie Knight-Errant Don Quixote of the Mancha, Chelsea: The Ashendene Press, 1927-28.
2 volumes. Folio (440 x 310 mm). Double column, printed in red and black, ornate initials and borders designed by Louise Powell and cut on wood by W.M. Quick & Geo. H. Ford, original dark green morocco by W.H. Smith & Son, stamped to the turn-in, minor marks to prelims of each volume, each housed in custom morocco backed clamshell case.
Provenance: Philip Duschenes (bookseller's ticket in each volume); Maggs (pencil note to endpaper).
A FINE COPY OF THE ASHENDENE PRESS DON QUIXOTE, limited to 225 copies on handmade Batchelor paper (there were 20 on vellum), and bound in green morocco (also available in pigskin and morocco-backed boards). The first work to be printed with Hornby's new Ptolemy type, modelled after F. Holle of Ulm and used for the 1482 printing of Ptolemy's Georaphia. Hornby 36.
