Containing 1 engraved portrait, 4 additional engraved titles, 31 engraved plates, and 1 double-page map. Text collates [4], xiv, ccxxiv, 199, [1]; [4], 418; [2], xiv, 306; [4], 346 pp. Nicely bound in full period calf, all edges gilt. ****************** FIRST IBARRA EDITION AND "THE FINEST EDITION OF DON QUIXOTE THAT HAS EVER BEEN PRINTED" (Updike II, 73-75.) Only 1,600 were produced, and the paper used was made expressly for this edition. It contains the first map depicting Don Quixote's journey. In addition to the map and other engraved plates, numerous engraved headpieces and initials adorn the text. In all, this edition is exactly what it was intended to be when Ibarra undertook the task: a masterpiece of Spanish printing. An excellent example. – From the collection of Scott Murphy.
Condition
All volumes intact, some cracked hinges, spines worn and with varying degrees of chipping, corners and edges worn. Contents quite clean throughout with only occasional light foxing, final volume with small 1" water-stains to upper/inner corner of several leaves in a few different places, a Very Good example.
