Item Details
Description
W/C of a German prison called Kastell, which held political prisoners, most revolutionaries during the war of 1848, unknown artist, mid 19th century or earlier. The letter attached to the watercolor, written by former Civil War soldier Henry Dietrich much later in life when he was a private citizen is dated 1916. It describes 2 of the prisoners and his relationship to one, when he lived in Germany as a young man. One of the prisoners named Dr. Gottlieb Kellner, was one of the prominent revolutionist during the war and with the help of a young lady and a prison guard, he was liberated from the prison and escaped to the United States. He was editor for many years of the Philadelphia Demokrat journal. The letter goes on to describe another revolutionary political prisoner, a lawyer named D. Henkel, who was the author's first employer in Germany at the age of 15. This letter is signed "NY February 7, 1916 Henry Dietrich". Both the letter and the watercolor are in very good condition. Note - while the letter was written in 1916, the watercolor was completed much earlier, probably in the mid 19th century when Henry lived in Germany. Provenance: Found in a barn in Westchester County NY with other Civil War memorabilia included in this sale, most related to Lieu. Henry Dietrich who was a member of the 39th NY Infantry, probably the Garbaldi Guard in which there were 3 companies of German descent soldiers.
