Chancay Mummy Bundle False Head
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1450 CE. A mummy bundle false head made from woven cotton and a headdress made from slightly thicker fibers of alpaca or llama wool, the eyes and mouth painted / dyed directly into the textile. This head may have been part of a doll or mummy bundle, providing a face or identity for the deceased. Chancay mummies were wrapped in a seated position with yards and yards of cloth, in order to create a bundle, called a "fardo" and the bundle was then given a false head that was stuffed with fibers and sometimes offerings. This piece is mounted on a modern wood and cloth frame with modern stuffing. Size of textile: 19" L x 14" W (48.3 cm x 35.6 cm); canvas backing: 25" L x 20" W (63.5 cm x 50.8 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
