Description
A Carved wooden mask embellished with woven cotton textile and human hair, painted a brilliant organic red with kaolin like clay mineral pigment and tar to accent the eyes. Among the Chancay culture the deceased were buried in a seated positions and layered in numerous textiles. A mask or false head was placed over the mummy bundle. This area is Unique as items made of wood and textiles are often found in remarkable condition due to the consistently dry climate. The surface on this mask still has most of its original pigment. Red was favored color by the Chancay culture. This pigment was probably made from Cochineal, a precious dyestuff obtained not from a plant, but from an insect. Origin: North Coast Peru Culture: CHANCAY Date: 1000 A.D. - 1470 A.D. The mask measures 12 x 10 inches. A display stand can also be included for an additional $50.00
