Description
A very rare Old Carved wooden mask with bark cloth plant fiber headdress and shards of glass as eyes, and embellished with charcoal pigments and woven plant material. This mask was acquired during a "Hair Pulling" ceremony among the tribe. When a Teenage girl comes of age, she is paraded into the village and the entire tribe takes turns snatching bits of hair from her head as they dance and sing, with some wearing masks and costumes. The ceremony continues until the young girl is bald, thus signifying her transition from child to woman. This mask was collected in situ in 1970 at the head waters of the Amazon River in Columbia by the Museum owner. The mask measures 10 x 7 inches ( mask itself ) and 14 inches tall including the fiber headdress. A metal display stand can also be included for an additional $40.00. Provenance: Part of the permanent display at the Metamora Museum of Oddities, Metamora , Indiana.
