Beatrix (Beatrice) Sherman, American, 1894-1975, Patricia Peabody Roosevelt, May 5 1964, full length silhouette, autographed and dated, verso noted by artist. Lot includes pieces of correspondence sent to the artist from Patricia Peabody Roosevelt, on personalized stationary, signed. Note: Patricia Peabody Roosevelt (1922-1996) was the wife of Elliot Roosevelt, 24th Mayor of Miami Beach, Florida and son of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Biography: Beatrix Sherman styled herself after 19th C. French silhouette artist Auguste Edouart. Sherman, like Edouart, kept books with an extra copy of each sitter's silhouette enabling her to create an extensive personal archive that included both the silhouettes and the sitter's (sic.) autographs. Sherman traveled extensively, established a permanent studio in Manhattan throughout the 1950’s. She attended art classes at The Art Students League, eventually becoming a lifetime member. From an early age, she had begun copyrighting silhouettes of several of the famous people she cut. Sherman’s subjects include all the U.S. Presidents, as well as other politicians, military leaders, writers, royalty, prominent businessmen and women, socialites, athletes, artists, theatre, film actors, producers and directors.
