Beatrix (Beatrice) Sherman, American, 1894-1975, Twenty two silhouettes busts of mostly artists, writers, musicians, athletes, personages include Frank Fowler, Rose Melville "Sis Hopkins" , H G Deming, John Macpherson "The Mystery Chef", Evelyn Chandler(autographed)Evelyn Lane, Skippy Baxter, Bertha Foster, Louis Frohman and Montague Love, Marlin Walsh, Joe Danielson, A. B. Bamker, many autographed with personal inscriptions to the artist, some verso estate stamped, studio advertisement, studio stamp, exhibit stamp. Biography: Beatrix Sherman styled herself after 19th C. French silhouette artist Auguste Edouart. Sherman, like Edouart, kept books with an extra copy of each sitter's silhouette enabling her to create an extensive personal archive that included both the silhouettes and the sitter's (sic.) autographs. Sherman traveled extensively, established a permanent studio in Manhattan throughout the 1950’s. She attended art classes at The Art Students League, eventually becoming a lifetime member. From an early age, she had begun copyrighting silhouettes of several of the famous people she cut. Sherman’s subjects include all the U.S. Presidents, as well as other politicians, military leaders, writers, royalty, prominent businessmen and women, socialites, athletes, artists, theatre, film actors, producers and directors.
