Description

Civil War Patriotic Envelope Signed by Later US VP Henry Wilson
Civil War patriotic envelope featuring "" THE LOYAL STATES MASSACHUSETTS UNION"" design with figure of liberty and state seal. Envelopes of this type were used to generate patriotism and support during the war. This envelope is unique in that it was ink signed "" H. Wilson"" at the upper right top. Wilson, who was a personal friend of Lincoln and a government war department official, later became the US VP under Grant. The envelope (no letter) was addressed to the mother of a soldier in the 22nd Massachusetts Regiment, a unit raised by Wilson who initially served as colonel of the regiment. By signing it as he did it enabled the soldier to send the letter home without charge. Back of envelope, name of printer and 1861 date. Good condition with stains 5-3/8 wide by 3"" high
