A Monograph of the Jacamars and Puff-Birds, or Families Galbulidae and Bucconidae. London: Published by the author, [1879-1882]. First edition. Contemporary three-quarters calf over dark brown cloth, rebacked to style preserving the title label, the author label replaced, endpapers renewed, retains original blanks. 12 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches (31 x 24 cm); 55 hand-colored lithographed plates by J. G. Keulemans, in text figures, lii, list of subscribers, 171 pp. Spotting to blanks, old stain to edges and corners, faint at places and affecting one plate at end, small area of paper replacement below imprint on title, marginal paper flaw at Q2, rubbing to older portions of binding, a sound copy overall.
The first edition of Sclater's fine monograph on the Jacamars and Puff Birds, illustrated with "beautiful plates" (Anker). Sclater was the founder and editor of the ornithological journal Ibis and he was secretary of London’s Zoological Society for over 40 years. He gave his massive collection of over 9,000 birds to the British Museum in 1886, before those of Gould, Salvin and others.
