Description
This is a very fine and rare Pre-Columbian carved stone artifact from Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 AD. This is a classic Avian form Bird God and axe god pendant hand-carved and string-cut from light greyish jade. Visible on the reverse is a smoothed ridge showing where this stone slab was separated from the larger jade stone. Such Pendants resemble an axe or celt blade which was worshipped in ancient times, perhaps one reason is how much the invention of the stone axe changed their lives for the better. This Celt measures 4.75 inches tall. Provenance: The Robert Banks collection, Maryland.
