Description
Argentine Ornithology. London, R. H. Porter, 1888-89. First edition, number 70 of 200 copies signed by Sclater and Hudson for subscribers only. Two volumes. Finely bound in modern three-quarters red morocco gilt, the spines tooled and lettered in gilt, with raised bands. 9 1/4 x 6 inches (23.5 x 15 cm); with 20 hand-colored lithographed plates by J. G. Keulemans, 208; 251 pp. A very fine set with only light toning and the occasional spot, some plates trimmed a little close.
This set features beautiful Keulemans plates with fully colored backgrounds. "This important work treats of 434 species. The description and synonymy of each species are given by Sclater, Hudson supplying notes on habits, song etc." (Wood). Fine Bird Books (1990) p.139; cf. C.
