Description
**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Moche, Phase III, ca. 300 to 450 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of tall form with a gently corseted cylindrical body and a stirrup-shaped handle surmounted by a slightly flared spout. The stone-burnished, beige-ground exterior features 3 circular bands consisting of red-painted linear motifs, some of minimalist triangular forms, and others in stepped forms. Stirrup vessels like this were typically used as containers for liquids on long foot journeys or as offering vessels for the dead. Size: 4.66" Diameter x 7.9" H (11.8 cm x 20.1 cm)

Provenance: private Scottsdale, Arizona, USA collection, acquired in 1975 via descent, originally purchased in Peru in the 1920s

Condition
Small chips to rim and body, with overpainting along some chipped areas to complete the motif, and abrasions with scattered pitting, otherwise in great condition. Wonderful remains of pigment throughout.
