Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. A blackware lentoid vessel with a stirrup spout. The decorated body's upper shoulder is covered with incised, stepped motifs that resemble the sides of a pyramid. The Chavin people lived in the northern Highland Andes, and their capital, Chavin de Huantar, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artwork of Chavin represents the first widespread style in the Andes. The center of Chavin de Huantar is a massive, flat-topped pyramid, surrounded by lower platforms. Between 1200 and 500 BCE the pyramid space was used for religious ceremonies. The pyramid motifs on this vessel may be deliberate references to that monument. Size: 6.75" W x 8.85" H (17.1 cm x 22.5 cm)
