Description
English, early 20th Century. Oak. Large noise maker with crank handle and tin sound box. Stamped numbers. 9"h. 12"l.WWII British army-issue wooden anti-gas warning rattle. During World War II, the British government passed the Air Raid Precautions Act, requiring local authorities to be ready in case of an air strike. Rattles were an effective way to give warning of a sudden gas attack by simply holding the handle and spinning the rattle around—generating a loud and distinctive clacking sound. After the war, rattles like these would often end up in the hands of football fans who could use them at football matches to support their teams.
