Single folded lined letter sheet addressed to Hiram Barney, N.Y.C. Collector of Customs reading: Please allow Mr. August Cassin to enter free of duty the three hundred cases Potatoes pr Ships Admiral from Havre (France) for the use of the United States. Very Respectfully your Obt. Sert. A.B. Eaton Lt. Col. & A.C.G., Dec. 18, 1861, docketed on reverse, 7 5/8 x 9 ¾”. Amos Beebe Eaton (1806-1877) was born in Catskill, N.Y., graduated from West Point in 1826, served in the Seminole Wars, the Mexican War under General Taylor, served twelve years as a field officr and then joined the Army Commissary Department and during the Civil War he did such a fine job supplying the Union forces that President Lincoln appointed him Brigadier General on July 6, 1864 and was beveted Major General in 1866. Condition normal folds, else Fine.
