Amos B. Eaton Letter Signed Re: Reports on Sick and Wounded Soldiers
2pp, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, D.C., dated December 27, 1864. Signed "A.B. Eaton B.G.I." and addressed to the Quarter Master General, General George F. Davis. Written in another hand on Office Commissary General of Subsistence letterhead, Eaton encloses copies of his "Abstract Contingencies of 2nd quarter 1863" in an effort to prove that he is owed money by the State of Vermont due to a clerical error. At the bottom of the second page, Eaton includes a handwritten postscript, reading "Lately on duty in New York city as A.B.G.I." With mail folds and faint contemporary ink spots. Boldly signed, very fine.
Amos Beebe Eaton (1806-1877) was a career officer in the United States Army, who served as a Union general during the American Civil War. After a promotion to lieutenant colonel and assistant commissary general in 1861, Eaton was tasked with creating an effective supply system for the Union army, which was overwhelmed by the large number of troops enlisting at the beginning of the war. His commendable work led to President Abraham Lincoln's July 6, 1864, appointment of Eaton to the rank of brigadier general.
