Signed in type by Colonel Thompson of the 42nd Infantry who took command after the original commander, Lt. Col. Byam of the 27th Infantry was injured. (light offsetting)
The maps show engagements between American forces and Aguinaldo's insurgents during their ill-fated attempt to fight a conventional war against the better-trained and equipped US troops. before resorting to guerrilla-style warfare. The combat shown in the first maps took place after the Filipinos had lost the city of Manila to the Americans when forces commanded by General MacArthur (father of the World War II and Korean War commander) pushed across the Marilao River in a drive to capture Aguinaldo's capital of Malalos. The last larger map shows combat, 35 miles from Manila, when 1000 US troops captured a supposedly impregnable Insurgent stronghold, the stone fortress of Pinauran atop a steep hill surrounded by canyons. After the Filipino defeat in November 1900, Aguinaldo began to adopt guerilla tactics.
