Description: Varnished wood. 33.5 x 3.5 cm (13¼x1½"). Maps printed on both sides, with calendar for 1893 in gold on black on both sides of the finial.Victorian era desk accessory, designed for use as a map page turner or letter opener/paper knife. A similar example in the Queensland Museum (Brisbane, Australia), is described by them as "a promotional item for The Eastern Telegraph Company Limited and The Eastern Extension Telegraph Company Limited. Based in London, these companies were part of a network creating communication routes around the UK and across the Atlantic in the late 1800s . The blade of this wooden object is decorated with varnished sections of a world map, including Australia, with red lines indicating international land and sea telegraph lines." Other notable locales shown are New Zealand, Tasmania, New Guinea, part of Africa, Madagascar, Sumatra, China, Turkey, part of Europe, Black Sea with Odessa (today Ukraine), etc.
