First edition of the second work by Priestley. Armorial bookplate. Lot also includes a New York reprint of Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France in modern wrappers, fair condition. Early editions of Edmund Burke's iconic conservative attack on the French Revolution offered together with Thomas Paine's legendary rebuttal 'The Rights of Man'. Paine's response was one of the first to effectively puncture Burke's position and its publication caused a furor in England; Paine was tried in absentia, and convicted of seditious libel against the Crown, but was unavailable for hanging, being in France and never returning to England.

Moderate rubbing to binding, hinges nearly loose, slight soiling to title pages; still very good.
