Map of the World from the rare first printing of Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr.’s first edition of his New General Atlas. Map of the World on the Mercator Projection, Exhibiting the American Continent At Its Centre, published only in the first couple of months of 1860. The 1860 first edition of this atlas is now very scarce, but maps from the first printing are considered rare (see first part of description of Lot 1). This first printing differs from the second printing a few months later by having the plate number inside the map frame, and the decorative border appears to have a somewhat different design. Interesting projection which places the United States at the center of the world at the start of the Civil War era. The U. S. Exploration Expedition under Wilkes which is shown on this map paved for the way for Perry to visit and "open" Japan up to the West but a few years later, shortly before this map was issued. Close examination reveals numerous different named & dated exploration tracks across the oceans, including Capt. Cook. Lake Torrens is a hook in southern Australia, a short-lived but significant cartographic inaccuracy. The center of Africa is labelled "Unexplored Region." Partial Antarctic continent outline highlighted for emphasis at bottom corners. Minor toning to extreme paper edges. A lovely example of a rare map with great color. 14 x 17.75
