Maps from these atlases are desirable documents showing what the different states looked like at the time. This map of Georgia and Alabama, with original hand-coloring applied at the time of publishing, gives a good representation of what the states were like during the Civil War. Railroad lines are depicted quite prominently—they were the principal highways in those days. Also shows roads, towns, rivers, topography, islands, bays, inlets and other coastal features. Original, full hand-coloring by county. Dated 1860, it is an updated version from Mitchell’s 1865 New General Atlas (the decorative frame is slightly different).
