One of the earlier maps of the new state of West Virginia, here shown recently separated from Virginia. Shows the breadth of Chesapeake Bay from Cape Henry to the mouth of the Susquehanna River. A curiosity of this map is Harper’s Ferry still being shown in Virginia. This was a political issue at the time, with various groups taking sides. The cartographer here appears to be on the side of keeping Harper’s Ferry in Virginia. Eventually, the town was located in West Virginia, thus creating the West Virginia Panhandle. Dated 1863 and found in an 1864 edition of Mitchell’s New General Atlas, one of the finer atlases of its time. Shows the heart of the Civil War. Railroads, common roads, rivers, lakes, topography, bays, inlets, islands and other coastal features are depicted. Clean, white paper with excellent original hand-coloring by county. 11.5 x 13.75
