Description
World War I tunic of green wool construction, secured closed by five buttons bearing an embossed American seal. Sewn to the left sleeve is the insignia patch for the 85th Infantry Division, with a red overseas chevron and gold wire wound chevron. Affixed to the collar is a brass ‘USNA’ disc on the right, the left a disc bearing the infantry insignia. Suspended from the left top pocket is a World War I Victory medal. The interior sleeves are cotton lined and a label on the interior right pocket reads: ‘Fifth Avenue Clothes’. The 85th Infantry Division fought in Russia alongside the White Army against Bolshevik forces. Once they arrived in France as part of the American Expeditionary Forces the remainder of the division was broken up to support other units. Though they saw no action as their headquarters were in Lorraine as a depot division, the doughboys of the division served in the battles of St. Mihiel, Marbache, and the Meuse-Argonne.
