(1875-1955) Captain of the U.S.S. Minnesota from 1917-1918, recipient of the Navy Cross. Offered here is an archive of sixteen letters and documents belonging to Stone from 1916-1954. Included: two typed letters (unsigned) on ‘U.S.S. Minnesota Captain’s Office’ letterhead, 1p. 4to., Christiana, Norway, July 4, 1921. One letter is sent to Franklin D. Roosevelt in an effort to introduce him to a Paul H. Watson, the President of the United Debenture Corporation. The second letter was sent to Mr. Watson explaining he enclosed the previous letter to provide him with a means of introduction. Also present: two dinner invitations from Rear Admiral Charles Hughes on his two-star cards; invitations from the Portuguese Minister of War and the Norwegian Foreign Minister; a lunch menu from Sintra Palace; Christmas card on ‘U.S.S. Colorado’ letterhead; letters of thanks sent to Stone on ‘American Consular Service’ and ‘U.S.S. Connecticut’ letterhead, dated 1921; notice on ‘Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States’ letterhead, informing the recipient President Eisenhower and his wife will arrive at the Lincoln Memorial on Feb. 12, 1954 at a different time than normal; calling card for Commander Frank Matraus; program for the ‘Daughters of the Defenders of the Republic, U.S.A.’ event; booklet ‘The North Star’, 12p. 8vo., a tribute to the U.S.S. Minnesota, with a transcript of the address by Stone to the midshipmen for this ship’s 1921 cruise; a 1917 roster off officers for the U.S.S. Minnesota; and the Dec. 17, 1920 issue of ‘The Log’, a U.S.N. magazine run by midshipmen. During World War I Stone and his men aboard the U.S.S. Minnesota saw action serving as a training ship for gunners and engine room personnel. In 1918 she hit a naval mine laid by the German U-boat U-117. The explosion resulted in no casualties but forced the ship to return to the Philadelphia Navy Yard for five months of repairs, effectively excluding the ship from the remainder of the war.
