Description
Original World War II map, 46 x 25 in., 1938, a multi-purpose map titled ‘Air Navigation Map in Mercator Projection’ and noted as ‘The Preliminary Edition of the Eastern North Sea and Baltic Sea States’, used to plot air support for German attacks in Russia. On first pass, the map does not indicate elevations, air routes, or other information pertinent to air transport, and rather includes oceanic depths, magnetic declination indicated in green, major roadways and borders. However, a large, indelible blue pencil sketch in Poland marks off a trapezoidal area of flight paths and distances between the cities of Konigsberg, Brusterort, Riga, Memel, Kaunas, Daugavpils, Salzy, Dno and Pakow, all broken into 100km sections, most likely to indicate the maximum distance possible per flight. There is also another, more faint outline showing a flight path from Dugavpils north through Pakow which is less than 50km south of Leningrad, suggesting that it was indicating routes for the Luftwaffe to support German advances into the East. Although dated 1938, it is possible that this map used in 1941 prior to the siege of Leningrad. Usual with typical small holes at junctures, well-worthy of further research.
