(1880 - 1959) American general and statesman, Roosevelt's Army Chief of Staff during World War II and author of the Marshall Plan which sustained eastern Europe after the war. Fine content T.L.S. as Secretary of State on official letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Pinehurst, NC, Jan. 14, 1949 to a lady in New York. In part: '...I appreciate your thought of me and your interest in my recovery. Mrs. Marshall and I are grateful for your good wishes and your blessing. Mail addressed to Mrs. [George S.] Patton at Green Meadows, South Hamilton, Massachusetts, will reach her...' Tiny marginal stain, else very good. Six days after writing this letter, Marshall would leave office. The Patton farm in Massachusetts remains in family hands, now growing cannabis (!).
