A stunning, deep burgandy colored example of this famous Art Deco statue designed by Charles Lemanceau (1905-1980) and made by the French Saint-Clement Factory, circa 1929. Slip cast, features a pair of antelopes, signed on the edge of the base: "Lemanceau". This design was shown in the 1925 Saint-Clément's catalog, page #1. It is also illustrated in "Craquelés, les animaux en céramique 1920-1940" by Patrick Malaureille, Massin Editeur, Paris, 1993, page #32; and in "Les craquelés Art Deco", by Alain-René Hardy & Bruno Giardi, Editions Penthesilia, Domont, 2009, page #65. Size of this piece: 13.75 in. (35 cm) wide x 3.5 in. (9 cm) deep x 9 in. (23 cm) tall, condition excellent.Charles Lemanceau (1905-1980) was a specialist in animal sculptures and is noted for his ceramic pieces. He is considered one of the most important sculptors in the French Art Deco period. In 1923, he worked for Primavera (trademark of Le Printemps Department Store in Paris) and later for Saint-Clement and DIM. In 1925, he exhibited in the Salon d'Automne with other great names of the period. In 1930, he sculpted a gazelle for "la Maîtrise", Galeries Lafayette Department Store Art Studio, “Antelopes” in 1929 (sculpture no. 1 of the 1930s catalog of Saint-Clément earthenware) and greyhounds for Pomone, the workshop of The Bon Marché Department Store in Paris in 1931. His works are striking examples of French Art Deco period.
