Description
A rare Roseville Pottery still bank in the form of a dog's head made in the early 1900's, green gloss glaze, 2 3/4 in. tall x 2 3/4 in wide, this piece was probably a factory reject as pencil writing on bottom says "1905" and "BAD", and with incised model number "742", there is glaze burst on the end of its nose that probably caused the piece to be noted. These "rejected" pieces would still be sold by the pottery, but at a discounted price. Condition: other than the glaze burst on nose the piece is lovely, it does have a couple of firing cracks that must have happened before final glaze firing as the glaze completely seals them. Roseville pottery produced a number of small novelty still banks in the early 1900's. They were typically poorly produced as the molds were bad and the painting was hurried and hand done. Many examples reflect poor glazing (as the flaw in this example) and none were marked. Because they had to be broken to remove the saved money very few examples remain. This would be a nice edition to any Roseville collection.
