Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Syria, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2800 to 1500 BCE. A hand-built pottery wagon used as a toy for a child. The wagon body is covered in faded brown pigment and has an arching top cover embellished with incised linear motifs which resemble large acanthus leaves, a pair of laterally-pierced axle slots, and two small frontal slots for holding the reins or poles attached to the now-missing pull-horses. Carts like this example typically included additional horses or oxen, reins, and even anthropomorphic figures riding inside. This piece is part of a long tradition in the ancient Near East of pottery sculptures depicting both religious themes and themes of everyday life. Size: 3.875" L x 2.375" W x 3.6" H (9.8 cm x 6 cm x 9.1 cm).
