Description
Near East, Mesopotamia, probably Syria, Tell Halaf area, ca. 6500 to 4500 BCE. A petite terracotta fertility figure depicting a seated woman with enlarged, voluptuous breasts and thighs as if emphasizing her fruitfulness. Stripes of black pigment, now faded to umber, add details to the figure. These exaggerated female forms from this region are some of the earliest religious artifacts that we know of. Recent research suggests that they may have been made by pregnant women inspired by looking down at their bodies. Size: 1.8" W x 2.7" H (4.6 cm x 6.9 cm)
