Description
Ancient Near East, Northern Syria, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 2200 to 1900 BCE. An enticing, hand-built pottery figure of Astarte - known as Ishtar in parts of Mesopotamia - the goddess associated with femininity, war, and motherhood. The figure presents a flattened body standing atop a flared base and holds both arms folded at the elbows to resemble flapping wings and hands gently placed against her chest in a gesture of supplication. A floor-length robe drapes her slender physique a collar necklace falls from her sharp shoulders. Her captivating countenance shows off a beak-like nose flanked by huge, annular eyes and stylized ears, all surmounted by a bulb-shaped headdress. Size: 2.3" W x 6.1" H (5.8 cm x 15.5 cm)

Condition
Some minor restoration to headdress and shoulders; all done very well and difficult to notice. Remains of modern adhesive on base from previous display. Otherwise, very nice presentation with light earthen deposits throughout.
