Description
Two panoramic photographs. Maricopa, [California]: Westlake & Barry, 4 July 1909. Title and photographer's imprint in negative.

Two candid shots of the California frontier on Independence Day. The top image shows a gathering crowd amid saloons and other hastily built wood structures reminiscent of classic gold rush boomtowns, likely for the imminent rodeo. A mix of horse-drawn carriages and automobiles emphasizes the rapidly changing nature of the California countryside in the early 20th century. The bottom image is captioned “Bronco Busting,” and features a large crowd standing around a wide clearing watching cowboys try to break wild horses in the summer heat of the San Joaquin Valley.
