Description
A Japanese daisho (a pair of swords), circa 1530The katana blade shinogi-zukuri, chu-kissaki, torii-zori. Ko-gunome with sambonsugi-midare hamon, mokume, and masame hada. Midare-komi boshi with deep kaeri. Old, partially slightly scratched kesho finish with smaller over-polished flash rust stains. Ubu nakago with two mekugi-ana, takanoha yasurime, inscribed "Kanemoto". Gold-plated niju-habaki with yasurime. The wakizashi blade shobu-zukuri, torii-zori, gunome hamon, and clear mokume-hada. Midare-komi boshi with short kaeri. Old, partially somewhat scratched kesho finish with smaller over-polished flash rust stains. Ubu nakago with two mekugi-ana, one filled with shakudo, kate-sagari yasurime, inscribed "Noshu Seki Ju Kanemoto". Gold-plated niju-habaki with extensive nekogaki. Shakudo fuchi-kashira decorated with a very fine gold relief depicting cloud dragons with shakudo eyes on a nanako ground, inscribed "Tsusho Yoshihisa" (Hitachi, ca. 1760). Tsuka applied with fine same, copper menuki with gold applications in the form of a large, superbly crafted cloud dragon, bound with green silk thread (partially loose). Mokkogata shakudo tsuba with gold dragons between waves, the spray indicated by gold dots. Kogai and kozuka ana filled with little embossed gold pegs. Goto work made around 1800. Black, vertically ribbed lacquer saya, shakudo kurigata (the wakizashi has one missing), also decorated with gold dragons. The wakizashi saya with one shakudo bar with gold inlaid kiri mon, en suite decorated iron kozuka, a raised gold dragon with shakudo eyes, on very fine tsuchime ground, inscribed "Yanagawa Naomitsu" (Musashi, ca. 1800). Katana: length K/M 65.4 cm, overall length 97 cm. Wakizashi: length K/M 39.3 cm, overall length 65 cm.A rare, superb daisho that also stands out due to its excellent mountings dating from the second half of the Tokugawa period. The blades were made by members of the famous swordsmith family Kanemoto spanning two generations. Usually blades of different provenance and similar form were put together to create a daisho.Condition: II -
