Description
A large inscribed creamware jug, circa 1820-30
Probably Dawson & Co, Sunderland, inscribed with a marriage verse below the names 'William and Ann Heeds', printed and hand-coloured with a scene of the Battle of the Nile, the reverse with 'A View of the CAST IRON BRIDGE to be Erected over the RIVER THAMES', cheerful flowers painted all around, 24.8cm high
Footnotes:
John Rennie's Iron Bridge spanning the Thames at Southwark was started in 1815 and opened in 1819. Although the print indicates that the bridge was not yet completed, it is apparent from the continued appearance of the Battle of the Nile print that these popular scenes were being used for decades after the event. The same two prints are found on a similar jug dated 1834. See the same print of the Nile on a mug in this sale, lot 123, which is attributed to this particular Sunderland potter by the print's association with a piece marked for Dawson & Co.

Condition
There is restoration to most of the spout and a small area to one side of the spout. There is also restoration to a section of the rim to the same side (battle of the Nile) of the spout. This does not correspond to any restoration on the inside of the rim at this point. There is restoration to the footrim also located under the spout and a little staining to the footrim elsewhere. Otherwise, the jug is in god condition, the decoration remaining well.
