Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A fascinating serpentine figure of abstract form known as an axe god with string-cut grooves creating the both anthropomorphic and avian-esque presentation. Standing atop short, delineated legs, the figure holds both hands together at his waist. His sloped shoulders and thick neck support a sizable head with drilled eyes beneath a heavy brow and a straight, slightly open mouth. Scholars believe axe god figures were formed from discarded or otherwise unusable stone axe heads. Size: 1.5" W x 3.8" H (3.8 cm x 9.7 cm)
