Description
Born in Manitoba to Santee Oglala Sioux parents, Maxine spent her early childhood on her mother’s reserve. However, at the age of six, she left to attend an Indian residential school. While Maxine initially pursued a career as a legal secretary, her passion for painting and drawing soon took precedence. Enrolling in an advanced design course, she received encouragement from a perceptive teacher who noticed her inclination towards linear expression. This guidance led her to explore the use of shape and line to convey movement, a skill that is evident in much of her current work.
Over the years, Maxine has honed her proficiency in painting and drawing, delving into various printmaking techniques such as serigraphy, etching, and stone lithography. More recently, she has directed her artistic talents towards creating editions in cast paper and limited edition bronze castings.
Maxine has garnered an excellent response to her artwork, allowing her to commit herself full-time to the pursuit of art. She signs her creations with her Sioux name, IOYAN MANI, which translates to “Walk Beyond.”
