Description
Maxine, born to Santee Oglala Sioux parents in Manitoba, spent her formative years on her mother's reserve. However, at the age of six, she departed to attend an Indian residential school. Although she initially pursued a career as a legal secretary, her deep passion for painting and drawing soon took precedence. Enrolling in an advanced design course, Maxine's innate inclination for linear expression was noted by her instructor, who encouraged her to harness the power of shape and line to convey motion. These lessons have left an indelible mark on her work today. Over time, Maxine has honed her skills in painting and drawing, delving into various printmaking techniques such as serigraphy, etching, and stone lithography. More recently, she has ventured into creating editions in cast paper and limited edition bronze castings.
Maxine's artistic endeavors have garnered tremendous acclaim, affording her the opportunity to dedicate herself entirely to the art form. She signs her artwork with her Sioux name, IOYAN MANI, which translates to "Walk Beyond."
