Description
Maxine, born in Manitoba to Santee Oglala Sioux parents, spent her early years on her mother's reserve. However, at the age of six, she departed to enroll in an Indian residential school. While initially pursuing a career as a legal secretary, Maxine's focus shifted towards painting and drawing, overshadowing her professional trajectory. Participating in an advanced design course, she received guidance from a teacher who noticed her affinity for linear expression and encouraged the use of shape and line to convey movement. These lessons resonate in much of her current body of work.
Over the years, Maxine has honed her skills in painting and drawing, extending her expertise to include serigraphy, etching, and stone lithography. More recently, she has ventured into creating editions in cast paper and limited edition bronze castings.
Receiving an excellent response to her artistic endeavors, Maxine now dedicates herself full-time to the creation of art. She signs her creations with her Sioux name, IOYAN MANI, meaning "Walk Beyond."
