Description
Manufactured circa 1850-1870 and marked "R. Beauvais" on top barrel flat. R. Beauvais is listed as a St. Louis-based gunsmith who mainly made half stock percussion rifles. He is listed in operation in St. Louis from 1858-1875. The entry in Gluckmann and Satterlee's "American Gunmakers" also alleges that Beauvais supplied the Confederate members of "Order of American Knights" or "Knights of the Golden Circle" with arms. Sights are a dovetailed German silver blade front and a tang notch rear sight. Fully octagonal barrel. Stock is walnut with checkered grip, Schnabel forearm, Geramn silver forearm tip, and German silver mountings. Back action lock and mountings feature floral engraving. Serial numbered 11 on end of trigger guard near butt. CONDITION: Very good, with iron assemblies turned a brown patina. Stock is very good with minor age related handling marks but no major signs of distress. Mountings retain a pleasing mellow patina. Action is soft on half cock, but will hold on full cock.
