Description
Likely manufactured by F. J. Bitterlich of Nashville, Tennessee for sale by Schneider & Co. of Memphis, Tennessee circa 1850-1859. These deringers were popular and carried by Gold Rush miners as well as Civil War soldiers during the period for self-defense. Features include an octagonal barrel with 6-groove rifling, brass blade front sight, and notch rear sight mounted onto breech tang. Back action lock with distinctive spur trigger. German silver mountings. Stock is walnut with grooved Schnabel forearm tip and checkered square butt grip. Marked with Schneider & Co. marking on top flat and numbered as "2" on breech. CONDITION: Excellent for its age, with iron assemblies turned a lightly freckled gray patina. Mountings are turning a mellow patina. Stock is with repaired cracks at tang and near lockplate opposite lock. Mechanically fine. Bore is packed with preservative grease with well-defined rifling.
