Featured in this lot is this US Civil War Confederate sword by James Conning circa 1860's. The sword features a wonderfully and professionally crafted stainless steel blade with a brass basket guard and a leather handle. The sword bears the James Conning makers mark on the blade just above the hilt and reads as follows: James Conning - Mobile Alabama. James Conning was a man from New York that at 21 years old moved to Mobile Alabama and opened a shop to fix and tend to watches and silver work; he got into making swords during the Mexican War and as time got closer to the Civil War James Conning was a prominent sword maker through this time period. The condition of this Civil War Sword is good for its age and shows a good patina on the blade and to the scabbard itself but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this sword is 41 1/4" x 5" x 4".
